Most, fewest professionally active psychiatrists by state

California has the most professionally active psychiatrists while Wyoming has the fewest, according to KFF data as of September 2026. KFF tallied active MDs and DOs in each state and the District of Columbia using a special data request of state licensing information from Redi-Data. The counts are raw totals and are not adjusted for population. Nationwide, 59,864 psychiatrists are practicing, making up about 12% of the country’s 486,346 active specialist physicians.
